Senior Living Tour Checklist for Seniors and Families

A beautiful lobby is easy to notice. The details that reveal everyday care require a more deliberate look.

Watch the ordinary moments

Arrive with enough time to notice the pace of the setting. Are residents engaged or comfortable? Do team members greet people by name? Is the environment calm, clean, and easy to navigate? One busy moment is not a verdict, but patterns are meaningful.

Look beyond the most polished rooms. Ask to see common areas, a typical residence if available, outdoor space, dining, and the route a senior would use every day. Notice light, noise, seating, bathroom access, handrails, and the distance between key spaces.

Ask care questions directly

Ask how a care assessment is completed, how medication routines are managed, who is present overnight, how the setting responds to falls, and how families are told when needs change. Specific answers suggest that the care team understands the daily reality of its work.

For a senior living with memory changes, ask how the environment supports orientation and comfort, how staff respond to distress, and how the community balances safety with dignity. The answer should describe an approach, not merely repeat a promise.

Compare daily life and connection

Ask what a normal day looks like, not just what appears on an activity calendar. How are meals handled? Are there opportunities for outdoor time, music, conversation, faith practices, or quiet time? How can family members visit and stay involved?

A strong fit reflects the senior’s personality. A highly social senior may want a full calendar and many peers. Another senior may prefer a smaller, quieter rhythm with more individual attention. Neither preference is wrong.

Leave with written answers

Request a written explanation of the monthly rate, what is included, what care costs extra, and what could change the price. Keep the same notes for each tour so first impressions do not outweigh the facts. Our assisted living tour checklist can help you compare visits side by side.

Senior Locating helps families think through these questions before a tour, not after confusion has set in. We can help you focus on options that suit the senior’s needs, preferred area, and daily life.

Bring this checklist with you, then use the same questions at every community so the differences are easier to see.
